Ataneres Ensemble is a professional string orchestra with roots in Leuven. In addition to the established repertoire, the ensemble focuses on original combinations across different music and art genres.
Since the “year of birth” 2017, the ensemble has gained fame with numerous crossover projects. Both classical and contemporary repertoire is presented, often minimalist and avant-garde, in combination with, for example, film or word art.
Ataneres puts an explicit focus on Flemish and Belgian contemporary music. A whole series of recordings have already been made within this genre with praising reviews and attention on national radio channels and international streaming platforms. The ensemble received the Fugue Trophy for this in 2019.
The ensemble is composed of a mix of Belgian and international musicians and is under the artistic direction of Wim Spaepen. They work together with renowned soloists, conductors and artists from home and abroad. Concertmasters of the ensemble are Nicolas Dupont, Nadja Nevolovitsch and Hugh Desmond.
The string orchestra is a welcome guest in the established cultural centers in Flanders and the Netherlands. Ataneres has therefore already given concerts in many prestigious Belgian halls (such as Flagey, Concertgebouw Brugge, Bijloke and Queen Elizabeth Hall) and at many renowned festivals (including Klarafestival – Waldenfestival, Belgian Music Days and Festival Zeeuwsch-Vlaanderen).
Ataneres not only strives to be a creative forerunner in artistic projects, but also wants to be innovative in cultural entrepreneurship. We actively focus on collaborations with major international players such as Siemens, we have our own support network with the "Friends of Ataneres" and we also provide alternative forms of funding.
